Taking a wild guess on the reason that grip driving sucks in Ghosterion NFS games...

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 11:29 PM PDT

    It's the tires... kinda.

The first thing that you're gonna want to familiarize yourself with is what a slip angle is. This is the difference between the direction a tire are pointing, and the direction that they are actually moving. This generally increases with steering angle, speed, and load on the tire. Tires will generate their maximum amount of grip/lateral force at a specific slip angle. Tires that make their peak grip at lower angles are generally more "responsive", whilst tires that make peak grip at higher angles tend to have a more gradual build-up of grip.

In the case of NFS, this becomes relevant for two things: the tire physics, and the drift component.

    Drifting:

    - The drift component used in Criterion/Ghost's games is engaged when the car enters a certain average slip angle, which is determined based on what the player is inputting. As the required slip angle increases, it is generally more difficult to engage a drift.

    - Most cars in Heat will enter a drift at 5-10 degrees of slip when steering, 2 degrees on braking, and 3 degrees with a gas stab. These numbers will vary by car.

    - Grip parts will increase these angles, drift parts will decrease them.

    Tires:

    - Most cars in Criterion/Ghost's games will generally make their peak grip at ~20 degrees for the front, and 10 degrees at the rear. This results in the rear tires building up grip quicker than the fronts, promoting understeer. This generally keeps the cars predictable and easy to drive, and the understeer is usually mitigated by the drift component rotating the car in a drift. However, this rearward grip bias is quite excessive and doesn't result in good cornering characteristics outside of a drift.

Generally, you will want to maintain an average slip angle somewhere between 10-20 degrees in order to get the maximum amount of cornering grip, which is generally difficult to maintain without entering a drift. Thus, the general meta is to maintain a small drifting angle, otherwise known as "microdrifting".

Now, I believe there are a few things that can be looked into in order to improve the grip driving experience.

    - Balancing out the grip between the front and rear tires. A slight rear-bias is ideal, but it should not be as extreme as it is currently.
    - Decreasing the peak grip angle. Some care will have to be taken here as overdoing this will make the car twitchy and difficult to control with a gamepad, something that Ghost themselves warned about.
    - Adjusting front and rear suspension stiffness in order to manipulate tire slip angles.
    - Fixing the incorrect weight distribution that half of the car list seems to suffer from.
    - Increasing the slip angle required to enter a drift. This may require some other changes to the drifting config in order to keep drift entries smooth.
    - I do not recommend disabling or removing the drift component as it does a lot to keep the car stable when oversteer does happen.

I cannot guarantee that any of these things will be completely effective, but I do believe that they may alleviate some of the current handling woes.

What are some solutions to prevent the game from crashing? If there are any solutions that are up to date I would be very grateful since everything I googled are from forums that were written a couple of years ago.

One thing that I liked about Payback aside from the customization aspect was the damage model. I understand that Heat likely toned this damage down do to licensing but it’s still kind of a shame that I think Payback has a better damage model then Heat.

NFS Heat events are pretty lackluster IMO

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 10:49 AM PDT

The last nfs game I played before heat was Underground 2, and I gotta say I'm really disappointed. Here's what I mean. In UG2 all the races felt like a roller coaster, there were tons of curvy twists and turns with lots of sudden elevation changes, some jumps here and there and not a lot of flat roads. It felt like the devs based the map around the races to make them as enjoyable as possible. Heat just doesn't do that for me, it feels like I'm driving in a real city which means the roads are boring, at best you get some turns and maybe some gradual elevation changes. Off road races are the only ones that have some form of that feeling. Heat feels like the devs made a normal city and put some mundane races in afterwards. Anyone have any thoughts about this.

Why do you dislike Payback that much?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:10 PM PDT

    Hello fellow redditors,

Title says it all, I'm curious about why I read so much negative stuff about Nfs Payback. It's not a brilliant game, I know, but that bad?

I want the ability to get in/out of my car and go shopping like in GTA V and just explore on foot. Ya know just a change from racing.
