Unpopular opinion: I find Most Wanted 2012 to be a more polished game than Heat

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:33 PM PDT

Don't take this to mean I dislike Heat, I still believe it's the best NFS made by Ghost.

However after going back to Most Wanted 2012 recently, I can't help but feel I'm playing a well-baked game. The visuals are stunning, the Burnout physics are fun, and the multiplayer experience is quite good. Criterion's brake-to-drift handling model feels very smooth compared to Ghost's and the map in MW2012 feels like it was built to make use of it. The cop chases are fun too, especially at Heat 6 when the SWAT trucks come out

There are things Heat does better than MW2012 however, like having customization, having a story, the option to race with a grip setup that works, more intense cop chases, etc. But in the time I've spent playing MW2012 I've rarely encountered visual glitches, or any game-breaking, savegame wiping bugs. The daytime lighting is miles above Heat's, and the nighttime really has that darkness of a city in the dead of night.

I just find it funny that Criterion had a game with a completely different vision in mind originally (i.e. more like Most Wanted 2005) but then had to scrap it and quickly come up with a new concept in a short time and yet still feels more like a complete and polished game than what Ghost can do with two whole years of dev time. Honestly, this gives me confidence that Criterion can lift the franchise from the slump Ghost left it in.

Thank you for reading my midnight ramblings. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Just ordered Underground 2 for the PS2

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:02 PM PDT

After a long battle of trying to decide if i should get UG1, or UG2. They both look great. I finally decided to go with UG2. It seems to be the more popular one. And it has more content. I've never played the Underground series. Can't wait to play it when it arrives!

    NFS High Stakes 2 Concept

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:17 AM PDT

    NFS High Stakes 2 Concept

Before we get started, this is just an idea that came as my worry grows that the next few NFS games will end up as the last few games - amazing graphics, horrible physics, bland overall.

In no way is this meant to rip on NFS 2015, Payback or Heat. But we need something new, or radical, is a better way to put it. A few older racers here might remember High States (Road Challenge for EU) from 1999 which was the first NFS game to have a career mode, and lets face it, sometimes that career mode was unforgiving. Starting from damage to your car that you had to fix with hard earned race money if you wanted your car to perform well, all the way to even losing your car in pink slip races.

The latter I have to point out that one time I was losing in a pink slip race, neither me or my AI opponent have crossed the finish line but I knew there was no way I could win. So I hit escape/pause, and pulled the plug on my computer from the wall, effectively shutting off everything. I restarted my computer, started the game, and voila.. my car.. gone. Because the game wasn't stupid. Unforgiving. Perfect.

Enter NFS High Stakes 2. In this game, all of the tracks that are in the original game would be in a large map from the US to Europe, the tracks connected with highways and other roads. The environment transitions from desert/canyons, forest, mountains, farmlands, coastal scenery, urban areas, the same way it does in Rivals. See the HD map I created

    https://preview.redd.it/0pe9w3c8eh751.jpg?width=3464&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab00fd8913909d68931d8f68409e43f6094abe8b

    1. Redrock Ridge/Lost Canyons
    2. Hometown/Country Woods
    3. Atlantica/Aquatica
    4. Dolphin Cove
    5. Empire City
    6. Raceway USA
    7. Kindiak Park
    8. Rocky Pass/Summit
    9. Snowy Ridge
    10. Celtic Ruins
    11. Durham Road
    12. Route Adonf
    13. Raceway Spain
    14. Landstrasse
    15. Raceway Italy

    (Neon green lines - Highways)

Though the physics of HS 1999 were on par with.. well 1999, still the game had NONE of the famous annoying elements that we cringe at every time we play a game. That's right -

    • No BS rubberband AI
    • No BS hive mind police AI
    • No BS super skilled opponent AI

It was just purely your skill vs the AI skill. And this was satisfying, the game was fair and challenging at the same time with real consequences.

The physics of High Stakes 2 should be somewhere between Shift and Rivals, the more realistic the better but it doesn't have to be 100% real. (With the opposite end of the spectrum being Undercover, The Run, even Payback and Heat, all of which have cringy bad physics).

The damage physics however could be more serious than the original game, in which you desperately tried to avoid even touching a wall as that would result in expensive body damage. Jump too much? Your suspension starts lowering your chassis which would result in you bottoming up and scraping the road. Damaged your engine from rear ending your opponents? Lower performance you got, enjoy.

Did your opponent damage his car in the pink slip race without you even knowing it? You'll know it if you win, as you're gonna be the one fixing his (your) car.

In HS 2 the damage could be more detailed, with similar results. And we weren't (and shouldn't be) flooded with so much cash that damage or the loss of your car wasn't significant. It was. It definitely hit you hard and sometimes you even went back to previous tournament races to earn cash to replace the car you just lost.

Without dragging this out forever, shortly what we need in the new High Stakes -

    • Unforgiving Pink Slip races
    • Realistic physics and damage physics
    • None of the annoying AI elements I listed
    • All of the original tracks in an open world map
    • Weather effects (rain, snow) influencing traction, etc.
    • The original game modes plus career tournament and tour races (Chevy Cup, Porsche Cup) among other modes and whatever the developers come up with
    • A challenging game with none of the "everybody gets a trophy" we have these days. Yes, this game would not be for everybody.

PS - The desert environment in Payback looks amazing.

FINAL - Questions you might have

Q - "Shepard, what on Earth is that abomination of a map I'm looking at? Kill it with fire!!"

A - That, is a masterpiece that I created with a high tech program not even NASA has, the program is called Paint. I'll sell you a copy of the program for $20000.

But for real, this map is supposed to do nothing more than put the idea of High Stakes 2 with an open world map with all the tracks at their rough geographical location in your head.

Q - "The map looks quite empty, looks boring"

A - I never said these are the only tracks and roads it should have, it could have twice as many or as many as the developers wish, but these tracks should definitely be included.

Q - "Why are some tracks overlapping each other?"

A - Because some tracks are partially the same as the other and when put together, well lets just say the devs in 1999 didn't really think it would be a problem. For example Atlantica and Aquatica can be perfectly integrated, while the worst is Rocky Pass and Summit, as these 2 are mirrored AND altered versions of each other, I had to mirror Summit back just to fit it onto the map.

Q - "No I HATE this, we need Underground 3!!"

A - Look, I don't know how to put it, but we already got Underground 3 multiple times by now. Carbon, Pro Street, NFS 2015, Payback, Heat, ALL have insane customization, and if the devs would've called Heat "Underground 3" instead of calling it Heat, you would gladly accept it as U3. On the other hand, we haven't gotten a single High Stakes remake in well.. ever.

    Cheers

How big is NFS Heat on PS4 current patch?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:03 PM PDT

Unpopular opinion: Influencers and e-celebrities facilitated our disappointment. Be careful who you trust.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:31 PM PDT

With how the community has been reacting to Ghost's three main games since 2015 released, I'd think it's fair to say that the general opinion has been of general disappointment. That's not to say the games are dead, far from it, but they were plagued with issues. 2015's handling model was terrible, and was almost a walking Monster Energy advertising campaign, Payback was a mess all-around, and Heat felt unfinished and rushed in some parts of it. Post-game support for Heat was also laughable, but let's not beat that horse again, it's already dead.

I see people blaming Ghost, blaming EA, both, even the community sometimes, for what we got, but I feel like people need to start looking to YouTubers, influencers, game changers - whatever you want to call them - as part of the problem. They get sponsored, flown out to studios and given exclusive early access, sometimes even immortalized in-game, and the coverage the games get really shows that. Either malicious or easily impressionable, quite a few of them would find a surprising amount of positives to talk about, or just trot around the expression "THIS GAME IS SO HYPE!!!", more often than not downright shilling.

Of course, when all's said and done, most would weigh their words carefully and switch opinions when the games' flaws become widely known, or just downright start playing something else hoping their fans forget how much praise they gave the games in the first place. After the end of this era, I think there's one word that describes the situation: dishonesty.

As a disclaimer, I've made sure not to name or target anyone specific, as my goal is not to witch hunt, but rather to ask the community to be careful who we trust.

Which looks more realistic to you?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 06:39 PM PDT

The cops in the newer Need for Speeds kinda suck imo, or at least a certain aspect

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:34 PM PDT

I was going to say open world racing games in general, but I don't think there's too many of those with cops nowadays.

I've been playing Heat (which is the best of the newer titles imo) and I remembered playing some of the older NFS games and Midnight Club LA, if you were to drive off-road and destroy property they would send patrol cars to the area. They'd pursue you if you drove into oncoming traffic, or hit other cars. Now the only things that start a pursuit are driving fast or hitting the cops. Hell, back when I played Rivals I had a few cops (the AI mind you) straight up U-turn and come back to hit me while I was parked to start a pursuit.

It's not a huge complaint, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't take me out of it a little when I'm doing donuts in the middle of the road or plowing through the sidewalk and nothing happens. These cops are horrible at their jobs I must say lol. Now in an actual pursuit I will say they're pretty damn good

Is there a car in nfs heat that is just absolutely broken fast?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 04:03 PM PDT

I use the f40, so far I have not driven something that beats it in terms of its handling/speed combination, wondering if anyone has something of the same caliber they like to use?

[NFS 2015] Any good ways to get REP quick?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:59 PM PDT

I got NFS 2015 again after dropping it so long ago. Honestly I've been having a good time with it, I'm currently REP 40 and I am wondering what is the best way of getting REP? It doesn't even have to be a glitch, any legitimate farms would do good as well.

Need for speed rivals is no more a good game

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:05 AM PDT

There is only one strategy : Turn around a repair shop. The community is not helping just playing against bots, pvp isn't fun it's just a way to kill your time. If you want a good nfs cop vs pilot don't take this one go on hot pursuit. Need for speed rivals is dead
